KREIDEZEIT Iron Acetate Stain is a ready-to-use stain that produces a deep black colour, suitable for both tannin-rich and tannin-free woods.

Beschreibung

For all untreated timber used indoors. Timber containing tannins, such as oak and black locust, generally darkens more than softwoods due to its own tannin content.

We have combined a simple iron acetate stain – which many users also make themselves using vinegar and steel wool – with tannins. As a result, our stain also stains softwoods that do not contain any tannins themselves and which, with a simple iron acetate stain alone, can only be darkened by pre-staining. The principle is comparable to that of the iron gall inks used historically.

Trial application
It is recommended that you carry out a test application on a sample of the type of wood to be used before treating the workpiece, in order to assess the colour effect and any interactions with substances in the substrate. It is best to carry out a follow-up treatment as well.

Substrate requirements
The substrate must be untreated, dust-free, clean, dry, free from grease, chemically neutral and absorbent. Application temperature: at least 10°C. Wood moisture content < 15%. Do not apply to damp timber!
The wood should not contain any metal parts, as the stain may react with these and cause discolouration. Residues of glue stand out clearly, as they do not absorb the stain. Thin veneers are therefore also unsuitable for staining.

Preparing the substrate
Rub resinous woods with balsam turpentine oil or orange peel oil if necessary. First sand the wood coarsely in the direction of the grain, then dampen it (moisten with warm water, e.g. using a sponge) and, once dry, sand it finely.

Priming
The wood stain must only be applied to untreated wood. Do not use any other primers before applying the Iron Acetate Stain!

Application
Shake the product thoroughly before use. Apply evenly in the direction of the grain using suitable tools. For a darker colour effect, a second coat of stain may be applied once the first coat has dried. Mix containers with different batch numbers together before use.

Follow-up treatment
The wood stain colours the wood but is not a final finish. Once dry, the wood stain can be finished with any Kreidezeit oils or wax products. For woodturners, we recommend our Shellac Wax Polish (Item 4106) for a glossy finish. Excellent products that are also suitable for furniture include, for example, Kreidezeit Hard Wax Oil and Hard Oil, both of which are solvent-free. The after-treatment alters the colour effect due to different light refraction; as a rule, this makes the stain appear slightly darker.

Dilution
The stain can be diluted with water to achieve a lighter colour effect. To do this, carry out a staining test. Dilutions of up to 1:10 are possible.

Dryin times
Dry and recoatable at 20 °C and 60 % relative humidity after approx. 12 hours.

Suitable tools
Metal-free brushes and paint pads.

Cleaning the tools
Immediately after use with water.
